From Long Lines to Locked Doors: The Rise and Fall of Houston’s Turkey Leg Hut

#KRITICIZM - Turkey Leg Hut turned a loaded turkey leg into a Houston attraction. Founded by Lynn Price and Nakia Holmes, the restaurant became a Third Ward destination, drawing long lines, tourists and celebrities eager to experience its food and lively atmosphere.

Its appeal went beyond generous portions. Turkey Leg Hut became a place people wanted to visit, photograph and talk about—a restaurant whose reputation traveled far beyond Houston. But behind the crowds, financial problems and legal disputes were building.

In March 2024, the business filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. That September, the Houston Health Department ordered a temporary shutdown after inspectors documented 35 violations. Lawsuits, unpaid bills and rent problems added to the pressure. By November 2024, the original Almeda Road restaurant had closed after a judge allowed the landlord to proceed against the property.

The closure marked a dramatic fall for a business that had become part of Houston’s food culture. Its story illustrates a difficult business lesson: popularity can bring customers through the door, but lasting success also requires stable finances, consistent operations and effective leadership.

Still, the brand’s story may have another chapter. In August 2026, the Houston Chronicle reported plans for Turkey Leg Hut pop-ups at Harold’s Chicken, signaling an effort to rebuild through partnerships. The original restaurant’s run ended, but whether its name can support a lasting comeback remains an open question.
